Protect outsiders settled in Goa: Shantaram

Rajya Sabha MP Shantaram Naik today demanded that interest of outsiders settled in Goa should be protected while demanding Special Status for Goa.

He was speaking to the media persons at Lohia Maidan in Margao at the Goa Revolution Day programme.

According to Naik, Special Status is being proposed to restrain outsiders buying land or property in Goa in future.

“But the people from outside Goa, who are already settled here, are today Goans and we should protect their interest”, felt that RS MP.

Naik also felt that the Revolution Day should be celebrated only in Margao alone and not elsewhere since the historical event had taken place in Margao.

It was on 18 June 1946 when Dr Ram Manohar Lohia had come to today’s Lohia Maidan in Margao to defy the prohibition on public speaking imposed by the then Portuguese rulers.

Thousands of people had gathered in Margao to witness this event and the whole liberation movement had taken a step ahead with more vigor after this incident.

The liberated Goa had started observing this day as the Goa Revolution Day with freedom fighters in Margao taking initiative and then the state government adopting it.

Mr. Shantaram Naik should go through the rules. A person or a family who has been staying in Goa prior to 1968 is a Goan. outsiders who have settled here in Goa recently are not Goans. Shame on these Ministers who make such foolish statements.

Statement made by Mr. Shantaram Naik is totally foolish. How can people from other states who are settled in Goa from across the boarders be Goans ? In konkani we say "narlan uddok ghatlar godd zaina". And that is true to these people. They will never be Goans however hard you politicians try. This is nothing but a vote getting gimmick. I hope you will make such statements at the time of Parliamentary elections .And I am sure Goans will teach you how to speak right.

Does Shantaram Naik have any ideas as to how we should "Protect" those that have settled illegally on Communidade Property and some even on Private/Government Property.?

Should illegalities & criminality come under the umbrella of "Protection"?
