Medical dispensaries to be opened in villages

The Goa government has decided to open Rural Medical Dispensaries (RMDs) in state's remote and far-flung areas to increase the reach of medical facilities.

Health Minister Vishwajit Rane announced today that 10 RMDs, each costing Rs one crore, will be opened soon across the state.

One such RMD has already been inaugurated at Keri village in Sattari taluka while another one would be commissioned soon in Thane village.

Rane said facilities like dentist, ultrasound, blood checking and in some cases even dialysis, would be offered through these centres, which would be manned by a permanent doctor round the clock.

"There are many patients in the rural areas who neglect their oral problems because there is no dentist," said the minister who represents rural Valpoi constituency.

He added even pregnant women will now need not travel to cities for basic weekly check up.

Goa will also become the first state to have a diabetic's registry, which will keep the record of all the patients across the state.

Rane said the state in association with Danish health care firm Novo Nordisks will be maintaining this registry.

"We have already started giving free insulin to diabetic patients in the state," the minister said adding that 7-8 per cent population in the state suffers from diabeties.
