Salgaocar, Dempo quit FC Goa after ISL sets aside ban on them

Dattaraj Salgaocar and Shrinivas Dempo, the co-owners of FC Goa and prime promoters of football in Goa, have decided to quit FC Goa after the ban on them was set aside by the Indian Super League today.

“The developments post the finals on December 20, have caused deep distress to us, our families, the FC Goa team and Goans in general”, said Salgaocar and Dempo in a joint statement today.

The verdict was passed by the one-man ISL Appeals Commissioner Kshitij Vyas, a retired chief justice of Bombay high court. (Complete order attached below)

The Commissioner has set aside the order of 5th May issued by ISL regulatory committee, banning Salgaocar and Dempo.

He has also fully waived the 15-point penalty to get into ISL 3 while reducing the fine from Rs 11 crore to Rs 6 crore.

“The amount of fine should be used for grass roots development”, stated the order, while also waiving the payment to be made to Chennaiyin.

The long bans on the owners were lifted since this was a first-time offence and since they expressed regret for the incidents after ISL 2 final in Margao on December 20 last year, according to a media release from IMG-Reliance, who is part of the company that owns the league and the commercial partners of the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

Elano Blumer, the Chennaiyin FC marquee last term, has also submitted a regret letter.

Some media reports claim that the court proceedings against Blumer that was started following an FIR by FC Goa co-owner Salgaocar may be now settled amicably

Reports also state that the amount of fine of Rs 6 crore would be adjusted towards the prize money of the runners up (FC Goa) and from the central revenue pool.

Following is the joint statement that was released to the media by Shrinivas Dempo and Dattaraj Salgaocar:

“Our families have supported football for over five decades and it extended itself to our association in the ISL.

We invested in ISL because of our passion and the love of the game. We wanted to place Goa as a key presence on the football map. We have created in F C Goa a team with the right spirit and culture and playing football in the highest traditions of the game. F C Goa is a brand that has united Goa.

The developments post the finals on December 20, have caused deep distress to us, our families, the FC Goa team and Goans in general.

We have received a copy of the statement of Elano Blumer of Chennaiyin FC conveying his regrets over his actions that occurred post match on December 20.

In the interest of our innumerable fans and the team, with great sadness we have taken the painful decision to exit from F C Goa.

We would like to thank F C Goa fans for their unconditional love and being us in good times and bad times and coming in such large numbers to the Fatorda stadium. We would also  like to thank  all our F C Goa players , coach Zico and F C Goa staff and officials for  their support, dedication and commitment and partaking in our vision.

A special thanks to our co owners Virat Kohli and Venugopal Dhoot, the Government of Goa and our sponsors.

We are committed to football in the future and offer our fullest support in taking Indian football to greater heights.

FORÇA Goa!”

Sad news, but good news for the two powerful business establishments of Goa. Your families indeed made Football a popular sport in Goa, however, you two cannot take credit for that. Goa must indeed thank you for starting the franchise, and make Forca Goa a force that it turned out to be, however, total credit should not go to you two. If seen deeply, you guys are very shrewd from the business point of it and that is what you got from Football...so it was a give and take.. Deep down i strongly feel the two of you are men without enough @@@@@. With sincere apologies, You two looked very weak and without any DUMM in this whole fracass. It will not take long to find out that the two of you were systematically forced to opt out of the ISL. All said and done, Goa must thank you two and your families. Dev Borem Korum

Ironically the most loved and followed brand of Goa, FC Goa, is now owned (majority stake) by the owner of probably the most hated thing of Goa, Casino's..........

Couldnt the past owners of FC Goa have sold their stake to a NIZ GOENKAR ?? Or is it that niz goenkars were not interested in owning the brand FC Goa but only interested in raving and ranting online..........

What seems possible is FC Goa wasn't turning out to be a profitable venture to the owners and have decided to call it quits!

It's a good decision by both... They never deserved the humiliation what they went through....

I m sure entire Goa n every football fan is indebted to both the families for their huge contribution to the game.

Disgraceful and absurd over-reaction by the ISL in their entire handling of this issue from Day 1.

That two gentlemen who have been involved with, love, and have supported football, particularly Goan football, should feel compelled to withdraw from FC Goa casts a cloud over the whole concept of trying to enhance the quality of football in India.

The ISL need to ask themselves whether they are interested primarily in the game, - or the money and the showbiz. Shocking!!
