Make Marathi also Goa’s official language, demands Tiatrist Wilmix
GOANEWS DESK, MAPUSA | 17 February 2016 21:23 ISTTiatrist Wilson Mazarello will contest from Velim as the candidate of Goa Suraj Party, with a demand also to make Marathi Goa’s official language.
“We support the demand of making both Konkani and Marathi as official languages of Goa”, said Mazarello, who at one time was a strong proponent of granting official status to Roman script in Konkani, but not Marathi.
The issue came up today when Goa Suraj Party announced its three candidates at a press conference in Mapusa, including Mazarello, known widely as Wilmix.
GSP president Florian Lobo announced three new candidates today – Mazarello from Velim, Leocardio Monteiro from St Andre and Ankush Dharma Pal from Bicholim.
A question was posed to the leaders what would be their stand on the language issue when people from Bicholim support the demand of making Marathi also Goa’s official language.
“The issue is simply being politicised. There is nothing wrong if both the languages are made official languages. We have nothing against Marathi”, said Mazarello.
Lobo, who would also contest from Aldona, however took a guarded stand with a counter-logic.
“If Marathi is to be made Goa’s official language because there are Marathi-speaking people in Goa, then Maharashtra should also recognise Konkani as the official language of Maharashtra since Konkani people live in the Marathi state in large numbers”, he argued.
He also asserted that Konkani is the language of Goa and the official language issue is buried long ago.
The GSP has also demanded that the Regional Plan 2021 be scrapped since it would give boost to the sale of green land.
“The zoning is not done properly and the plan needs to be rejected totally”, said Lobo.
The party had announced in December candidatures of Lobo from Aldona and Zico Rodrigues from Panaji; now making it five.
The rest 25 would be announced within a fortnight, said Lobo, with a plan to contest 30 seats in the forthcoming Assembly election.
Tell us where there are two official languages in this part of the world other than US. You party makers are the main issues, don't disturb our peaceful Goa. Our mother Konkani language is already official and don't play crooks to get elected and fool people. Try some other tricks to fool people of Goa.

Many states in Goa have more than one official language.
Bengali, English and Kokborok are three official languages of Tripura. Urdu is additional official language for some districts of Bihar.
Telugu and Urdu are official languages of Telangana State.
