Mauvin stands up with Cong, Wagh elected Dy Speaker

With rebel Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho standing up along with his Congress colleagues, ruling BJP’s St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh was today elected the deputy speaker of Goa Assembly.
Unattached member Babush Monseratte, his wife and Congress MLA Jennifer as well as Goa Vikas Party leader Mickky Pacheco were absent in the House.
Wagh was elected by 26 against 10 votes.
Speaker Anant Shet earlier counted 27 votes on the ruling side, but later corrected the mistake.
The election had become crucial due to the whip issued by the Congress to trap their rebel member Mauvin, who otherwise supports the BJP while sitting in the opposition benches.
As he would have attracted disqualification if not voted against Wagh’s nomination, the opposition party had made all the preparations to file disqualification petition against Mauvin.
However, Mauvin today surrendered before the legal provisions and stood up along with his six colleagues in the Congress and three independent MLAs, to oppose the motion electing Wagh.
Caitu Silva, another GVP MLA, voted in favour of Wagh’s nomination.
While Jennifer Monseratte has not been attending the whole session since she is out of station, Babush was present in the House even during pre-lunch proceedings but stayed away from the deputy speaker’s election.
He had also not attended the speaker’s election held on 12 January.
The candidature of Congress MLA Pandurang Madkaikar for the deputy speaker’s post was not taken up for voting.
While thanking the House for electing him, Wagh said nobody would be able to silence him by making him the deputy speaker and he would voice out his feelings as and when needed.
He also brought to the notice of the House that both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, for the first time in the history of Goa Assembly, are artists.
“While Honourable Mr Shet deals with the clay to make the idols of Lord Ganapati, I deal with the words to create literature”, he said.
