Govt may face heat on MoI in a winter session from 11 Jan

The winter Assembly session would begin from 11 January.

The session would run for around a week, said Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar.

The exact period of the session would be decided by the Business Advisory Committee.

The session would begin Governor Mridula Sinha's address, followed by elections of the speaker and the deputy speaker.

Rajendra Arlekar has resigned as the speaker to take over as the minister.

Deputy speaker Anant Shet, who presently functions as officiating speaker, would ultimately be elected as the speaker since the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has already decided in this regard.

The party however needs to decide who would be the deputy speaker.

The BJP alone has 21 members in the 40-member House while three-member MGP, two-member GVP and two independents from Salcete, including minister Avertan Furtado are supporting the government.

Two more independents – Rohan Khaunte and Naresh Sawal would be in the opposition from this session since they have joined hands with independent Vijai Sardesai, post-Bihar elections.

The session is also expected to be stormy since the BJP has assured to amend the education act, with a proposal to make it a law to give salary grants only to the Church-run English medium primary schools.

Opposing this stand, the RSS-dominated Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch has already started state-wide campaign with the help of some Konkani activists.

Parsekar today told the media that the Land Acquisition Bill would also come up in the winter session.

The BJP led govt in Goa will be facing a dilemma next month when the Goa assembly winter session commences on Jan 11. The so called BBSM has threatened to launch a statevl wide agitation if grants to church run English medium schools are not stopped. However, the govt should call their bluff. The BBSM is a paper tiger and its empty threat will be exposed. Goans irrespective of caste, creed and religion are for modern education. for their children. The poor of all communities are sending their children to church run.English medium schools. Konkani activists like Arvind Bhatikar, Uday Bhembre and Pundalik Naik had better see the writing on the wall and withdraw from the RSS controlled BBSM, which is trying to bring in Marathi through the back door.
