BJP demands dissolution
05 March 2005 17:55 ISTThe Bharatiya Janata Party in Goa has demanded dissolution of the Assembly and fresh elections rather than keeping the Assembly under suspended animation, while welcoming the imposition of President’s rule.
Addressing a press conference after the news reached here that the union cabinet has recommended imposition of President’s rule in Goa, former chief minister Manohar Parrikar said people should be given an option to elect the whole Assembly once again.
Keeping the Assembly under suspended animation till by-elections are held in the six constituencies would not be proper on the part of the President of India when the whole Goa Assembly had become volatile.
The local BJP leaders have also demanded that Governor S C Jamir be recalled and a new person should be sent here to rule during the spell of the President’s rule.
“We have no trust in this governor, who has acted partisan to bring the Congress to power”, said Parrikar.
Earlier, after Rane won the confidence vote by one vote, the BJP leaders rushed to the Raj Bhavan, demanding dismissal of the Rane government.
Hundreds of workers gathered at the Raj Bhavan gates stoned the governor’s car while he was entering the Raj Bhavan. They also tried to attack the NDTV team while the local journalists cordoned off to save them.
The irate mob of the BJP also tried to forcibly shut down the shutters in the cities of Panaji and some other towns, but did not succeed.
