MGP, at 50, to give more powers to active members

Goa’s oldest regional party, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), on Saturday amended its constitution for the first time in its history of 50 years, giving more powers to active members in the organisational set up.

MGP President Dipak Dhawalikar told a news agency on Saturday that the Central Committee of the party which met in the city today adopted the amendments to the constitution.

"The active political members will get representation in the working committee and Annual General body," he said.

The party formed in 1963, soon after the liberation of Goa from the Portuguese rule, was in power for next 18 years, before it was defeated by the Congress party.

Currently, MGP is sharing power with the BJP in the state government.

Dhawalikar, who is a minister in Parrikar-led cabinet, said that the party will reach out to all the 40 constituencies by forming block committees.

"You can say that the party which is the oldest regional party, in its 50th year is all set to rejuvenate itself," he said.

MGP has three legislators in the current state legislative assembly and has been fighting the elections on its Lion symbol.

Dhawalikar said the constitution which was formed 50 years back was outdated and the current amendments are made keeping in mind the requirement of the growth of the party for next half century.

A representative each from the block level committees would be part of the central committee, he added.
