Subodh offers Chicken Cafreal for Lusofonia

As ‘Kombo’ (rooster) has been selected a mascot for the Lusofonia Games scheduled in November in Goa, Subodh Kerkar has offered to make his sculpture ‘Chicken Cafreal’ available for it, in a modified form.

His sculpture ‘Chicken Cafreal’ has presently been selected for one of the largest sculpture event of the world, in Australia.

It will be exhibited at an exhibition called ‘Sculpture by the Sea, Bondi 2013’, from 24 October to 10 November.

This is the third consecutive time that Subodh’s work is selected for this exhibition.

It receives 500 entries from 25 countries.

Subodh feels that his rooster could be an interesting symbol for Lusofonia Games since it combines the patterns of Goan palm leaves and the Portuguese Galo de Barcelos.

“The rooster can be created in many colours and even a memento can be made based on the sculpture”, he told goanews.com.

Subodh is willing to offer his sculpture for the Lusofonia Games and even work on a giant version.

The form of his rooster is taken from ‘Galo de Barcelos,’ which is a Portuguese symbol.

The legend of the rooster of Barcelos tells the story of a dead rooster’s miraculous intervention in proving the innocence of a man, who had been falsely accused and sentenced to death.

Subodh has associated his rooster with the famous dish ‘Chicken Cafreal’.

Some African slaves in the Portuguese army cooked chicken which was highly appreciated by the Portuguese officers.

They named this chicken dish Cafreal because it was cooked by Kafirs (non Muslims were called Kafirs).

Subodh’s present sculpture is executed with used truck tyres and cycle tyres.

“My work is a part of his ongoing series based on the ocean as a medium of intercontinental cultural diffusion,” he says.

Sculpture by the Sea, founded by David Handley, is the largest outdoor sculpture event in the world, attended by over five lakh people.

The curatorial panel consisted of Deborah Edwards – Curator Australian art, Art Gallery of NSW, Geoffrey Edwards – Director, Geelong Gallery, Dr. Michael Hill – Head of Art history and theory, National Art School, Sydney and Julie Lomax – Director, Visual Art, Australian Council for the arts.

There are many other artists in Goa who are competitive and could offer equally good if not better mascot for the Games.

I feel Subodh Kerkar's ‘Chicken Cafreal’ should be selected as the mascot for the Lusofonia Games.

This 'kombo' would be ideal for the mascot.
