Ration cards sold to illegal immigrants?

A BJP legislator today alleged that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and Nepal have procured ration cards in Goa through a racket operational in the coastal belt of the state and demanded a thorough probe.

Calangute MLA Michael Lobo told the state Legislative Assembly that an organised racket has been rooted in the state, which provides ration cards to anyone for a price.

"Department of Civil Supplies needs to check this racket. Bangladeshi and Nepali nationals have set up their base in coastal areas. The department should inquire as to how come they got the ration cards, which is an important document," he said.

He also added the ration cards were being sold to them at Rs 5,000.

Calangute is a tourism hub for beaches like Candolim, Sinquerim, Calangute and Baga.

Few days ago, couple of BJP MLAs had opined that the migrants coming to Goa should not be given ration cards on priority, while sidelining Goans.

Interestingly, civil supplies minister Daynand Mandrekar supported this contention and assured to give priority to Goans for ration cards.
