Matanhy's funeral on Sat, 24 March in Cansaulim

Tourism minister Matanhy Saldanha would be buried on Saturday, 24 March in his Cansaulim village.

The whole state was shocked with the sudden demise of the activist-turned politician. He was 64.

The funeral would begin from his Cansaulim residence at 3 pm. It would then proceed to St Thomas Church.

His body is presently being kept at the morgue of Goa Medical College.

After spending a day full with visitors at their Taleigao residence, his wife Alina, along with other relatives has shifted to Cansaulim.

They have requested people not to pay condolence visit since the family is just recovering from the shock.

Saldhana got a massive heart attack in his sleep at around 1.30 today early morning, after he returned from Canacona last night at around 11.30 pm, attending Shigmo celebrations.

Matanhy’s well wishers thronged to his Taleigao residence since morning when the state woke up with the sad news.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who had rushed to his residence early morning, was in tears throughout the days.

“I have lost the best friend”, he said amidst tears.

Many politicians across party lines as well as social activists, teachers, villagers and other people paid condolences by visiting his wife and the family.

I had the privilege of working alongside Mr. Mathany Saldanha on various issues and at many agitations. Unlike Mathany who sacrificed much personally in his struggle for a better Goa, many have become MLA’s without contributing to the betterment and welfare of society. For some of them it has been a tale from rags to riches. At times I may have disagreed with his views and approach. But nobody can deny the fact that Mathany was a great fighter. Men with the strength, courage and resolve as Mathany Saldanha are few. A fitting tribute to this lion of a man would be for every Goan to strive and salvage what remains of Goa
