All except 5 are illegal overseas agents: Eduardo

Goa has only five overseas recruitment agents operating with the valid permissions while the rest are dealing illegally, state NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro said today.

There are 30 recruiting agents from Goa featuring on the website of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs but registration of only five such agents is valid as of today, he told reporters.

The NRI commissioner heads a high level committee, comprising district collectors and police officials, which was formed to check the "illegal recruitment agents mushrooming in the state".

Faleiro also pointed out the instances wherein various agencies were found fleecing the aspirants by promising them recruitment abroad.

"Rule 25 of Emigration (Amendment) Rules, 2009 states that no recruiting agent shall collect from the workers the charges more than equivalent of his wages for 45 days as offered under the employment contract, subject to a maximum of Rs 20,000," he said.

The rule also makes it mandatory for such agency to issue receipts of the payment made to workers.

"We have come across several cases where persons have paid lakhs of rupees for employment promised abroad," Faleiro said, adding "sometimes the promise is not fulfilled at all or the job is provided at much lower salary".

He also expressed need to crack down on such agencies.
