Vishwajeet sweeps Valpoi bye-poll

Vishwajeet cries while pople cheer

Garnering 83 per cent votes, Congress candidate and health minister Vishwajeet Rane swept the Valpoi bye-election.

His BJP opponent Santosh Haldankar could get hardly 3237 votes, against 11,642 polled by Vishwajeet, with a huge margin of 8405.

The opposition party has blamed the people for the defeat of BJP, stating it is a victory of money power.

Taking a dig at opposition leader Manohar Parrikar, junior Rane countered the allegation. "It's a result of developmental work", he claimed.

Following rooting out BJP stronghold in one-time BJP constituencty of Valpoi, Vishwajeeet claimed he would now work to wipe out BJP even in Bicholim, Mayem, Siolim, Mandrem and Pale in the next Assembly election.

Even chief minister Digambar Kamat gave him a certificate stating that Vishwajeet would emerge as a leader not only of Sattari but the whole North Goa.

While Haldankar, out of frustration, blamed the voters for falling prey to money power of junior Rane, state BJP president Laxmikant Parsekar later tried to sober down the statement. "It is poverty of people that compells them to fall prey to such temptations", he said.

Vishwajeet, elected as an independent candidate in 2007 Assembly polls, had recently resigned as the MLA to join the Congress.

He had contested independent after Congress had denied him ticket since his father Pratapsing Rane was also contesting.

Presently, both are the Congress MLAs.

Father did not do any development for so many years in Goa as CM and now the son is going to reap the benefits .. I am referring to the Israel company been given the contract for Hospital equipment. Of course by keeping away bigger firms such as Siemens, GE and Philips.

Anyways development in one area doesnt count ... also they need to eat less money and fuel more in the grass roots. These foolish poor people enjoy politics and hail politicians as if the politicians will someday feed and take care of their families.

It is heartening to note that Congress has made it in Valpoi. Like his father, Vishwajeet has to work for the interests of whole of Goa and not only the North or his own constituency. Politics is not permanent and people are apt to change.

It has been said though that he has polled a record. Congratulations.

Congratulations for your spectacular victory. This shows that you and your father Shri PratapSingh are for the downtroden of the Goan society.Wish you all success in your future endeavours.
