Panaji to elect Parrikar's successor tomorrow
PTI, PANAJI | 12 February 2015 23:53 IST
Nearly 22,000 voters are eligible to exercise their franchise tomorrow in the Panaji assembly by-election which will decide the successor to BJP stalwart and former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar.
The by-poll was necessitated following Parrikar's resignation as CM after his new assignment as Defence Minister last year.
The polling will begin at 8 AM across all the 30 booths.
Parrikar's close aide Siddharth Kuncolinker is contesting on BJP ticket for the first time while Panaji Mayor Surendra Furtado is crossisng swords with him on Congress ticket.
There are two independents also in the fray - Margao-based IITian Sameer Kelekar as well as a Pedne-based lawyer Sadanand Vaingankar.
Kelekar is supported by many outfits and individuals, including Dr Claude Alvares, Goa's leading environmentalist.
Whoever wins in Panaji, the person should work for the development of the city.
Where there is will, they is a way. Small city of Panaji can be changed to a modern city.
The casinos in the Mandovi need to be shunted out of Aguada Bay. I am sure the licences given to them to operate were not to operate in the Mandovi river, where they are presently operating.
Parrikar has begun beautifying the water body in Mala (in front of Maruti Temple). I do not understand why he did not pursue it's development after he came to power for the last time.
We need more small bridges connecting Fontainhas to Pato over Ourem Creek. This will help in smooth flow of traffic.
The rotting nullah at St. Inez needs to be cleaned whatever it may cost.
Whoever wins, please work for development of Panaji.
