Prisoners to fill Colvale jail next week; select few from Sada

Jail authorities in Goa will be shifting prisoners to the newly built facility at Colvale village by next week vacating the century-old Aguada prison, a senior official said here today.
“The shifting of prisoners will begin next week. We will shift everyone at one time,” Inspector General of Prisons (IGP) Elvis Gomes told PTI.
IGP said that the entire Aguada jail would be closed down after prisoners are shifted to the new facility.
The new facility was inaugurated by Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on May 30, which incidentally was the statehood day of Goa.
The new jail is spread across 2,25,034 square metres and is built at the cost of Rs 107 crore. It is called as correction home keeping in mind the guidelines of National Human Rights Commission, Gomes said.
To start with, it will accommodate about 300 inmates.
It would include all the 122 inmates of Aguada jail, inmates of judicial lock-up at Mapusa, and some inmates of Sada sub-jail.
The new jail has a 15-bed hospital, a dental unit, a pathology lab and a pharmacy.
