High court also refuses to free Churchill in Berger bribery case

No bail for former PWD minister Churchill Alemao. The high court has also refused to free the political heavyweight in Louis Berger bribery case.

Alemao is in jail for the last 40 days, since 5 August, when he was arrested by the crime branch of Goa police.

His bail application was rejected twice by the CBI court while granting anticipatory bail to former chief minister Digambar Kamat.

Alemao had then challenged the orders before Bombay high court at Goa, pleading for parity.

But the high court, after hearing both the sides, today dismissed his petition, denying him bail.

His case suddenly took a serious twist after the crime branch raided last week the office of his IT consultant and seized property documents worth Rs 100 crore.

Alemao was arrested by police on 5 August and was remanded to judicial custody from 13 July.

Since then, he is at Colvale jail.

Both Kamat and Alemao are charged of accepting huge amount of bribes from Louis Berger International Inc., the US-based consultancy firm.

The firm is executing a water supply and sewerage project worth Rs 1031 crore, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Louis Berger officials had admitted before the Department of Justice in New Jersey of paying bribes to ‘a’ minister and government officials in Goa for the project.
