Witnesses in drugs-police nexus case threatened: CBI

The CBI today said that it will submit the progress report into the policemen-drug peddler nexus case in Goa to the High Court in six months.

A top official of the agency however stated that prosecution witnesses were being threatened to change their statements.

The Goa bench of the Bombay High Court has handed over three cases related to policemen and drug peddler nexus to the central investigating agency, which were initially probed by Crime branch.

CBI's Deputy Inspector General Pravin Salunke said here today that the agency was conducting detailed investigation into the cases involving two Israeli nationals and seven policemen and would submit the progress report of the cases to the High Court in the next six months.

Responding to a question, he refused that there has been pressure from any quarter.

"I am answerable to the Court as we were handed over the cases through High Court's directions," he said adding that the CBI was following all the procedures and guidelines.

The senior officer, however, stated that prosecution witnesses were being threatened to change their statements.

The witnesses were changing the statements given by them earlier as they were being pressurised, he said.

Several policemen were suspended after an Israeli drug dealer Yaniv Benaim alias Atala confessed of his links with elite Anti Narcotic Cell of the state.

In an another case, police sub inspector Sunil Guddler was found to be hobnobbing with the family members of David Driham alias Dudu, who was arrested in a narcotic case.

The investigation of the wealth collected and hidden by those while in power, could be one yardstick to guess as to which people could be involved in such dirty money multiplying business....??
