Join Cong? Let oldies sit aside, build confidence: Vijai

Independent MLA Vijai Sardesai is not outrightly rejecting Digvijay Singh’s proposal to join the Congress. But he wants the party to keep aside the same old faces as ‘mere mentors’ and give leadership in the hands of the young brigade.

“There are six ex-chief ministers and other same old faces who still want to control the Congress. Absolutely no scope for the youngsters. What is required is a confidence building exercise. Let something happen in this direction.”

This is the way Sardesai expresses hope (or making it a precondition?)

Though he admits that it is the internal matter of the Congress to decide who should lead, he said nothing fruitful can happen in the Congress until the old faces are replaced by the young.

“These are the same people who rule locally and misguide the Congress high comand. In such a situation, there is no question of joining the Congress”, said the Fatorda MLA, who quit Congress in 2012 to contest independent.

He is now strongly promoting Goa Forward, the regional outfit he has initiated, claiming it to be a platform for the young blood to lead the state.

He also feels the situation could change if a young voice like Curtorim MLA Alex Reginald Lourenco was given the reins of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee.

“But they didn’t do it. I believe he is the most frustrated Congressman in the party today. There are many such youngsters suffocating in the Delhi-controlled party of the oldies,” he said.

Rohan Khaunte, another independent from Porvorim, also holds the similar view.

While stating that nothing is static in politics till the last day, he is however presently holding the flag of Goa Forward.

But what if the Congress opens the doors for all the young people?

“Let water start flowing in the river. Then we’ll see what to do”, he says, not dismissing the possibility outrightly.

Prashant Naik, the Goa Forward leader, however feels that Vijai should not think of joining the Congress.

“It’s a party of grandfathers. They had 9 MLAs, today left with only 6. I wonder all 6 would remain with the Congress till election is announced. What is the use of joining such party”, asks Naik, who quit the United Goans Democratic Party to join Sardesai’s initiative – the GF.
