Shripad wants pub culture to be controlled
PTI, PANAJI | 13 July 2014 10:26 ISTUnion tourism minister Shripad Naik has said that the pub culture needs to be controlled and that tourism should not be promoted on its basis.
“Pub culture does not suit our country and hence we should try to control it. We should not sell our tourism on pub culture,” Mr Naik said.
His statement attains significance in the backdrop of a recent remark by Goa minister Sudin Dhavalikar who had sought a ban on bikinis on the beaches and had claimed that pubs were against our country’s culture.
Refusing to comment on the statement by Mr Dhavalikar that bikinis should be banned on the beaches, Mr Naik said, “I don’t know what was in minister’s mind when he made the statement.”
After Mr Dhavalikar’s demand, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had ruled out banning wearing of bikinis on the state’s beaches.
Meanwhile, the Union minister Mr Naik also said that the Central government wants to slash the visa fees and air fares to boost tourism in India.
Tavernas and pubs have been a part of Goan life for many many years.
We need not promote tourism on pub culture but pubs and tavernas have come to stay.
It is better to have them and let people decide whether they should drink or not.
By the way, most of the Goans know when to drink, how much to drink and when to stop.
I have not seen many Goans falling on the roadsides after drinks.
I would like to know what they mean by 'pub culture' or are these elected representative just making statements in support of their close mates in politics!
I do not think tourists come to Goa for pubs. At least foreigners have better pubs than us.
Since coming to power in Goa and the Centre, it seems like, some BJP-Wallas are demonstrating their true lack of vision and foresight.
Shripad Naik seems to be an honourable man. However I doubt he has a clear understanding of a changing/evolving world and India & Goa`s part in a "Global Village".
Lots of the culture in India today is based/fused /evolving from tit-bits of Western Culture.
Modern Indians want to move forward. But Goan Minsters and Politicians seem to express unnecessary and ill-thought of nonsense.
No Goan Minister seems to have a view on the Drug Culture, massage Parlour culture, Sex Escort culture, Gambling & casino culture etc.
I wonder why.?
Rumour has it or it is alleged that Several Goan Ministers are involved in these nefarious cultures.
It is also pertinent to note that Goan Christians are more likely to follow western Cultures through historical inheritance more than their Hindu Brethren.
The Politicians making these comments on Culture seem to show their bias & prejudices towards the Christians.
The remarks being made by Sudin Dhavilikar on several other instances i.e sequestering Portuguese Passports holders properties & pub Culture ,indicate he has an inherent dislike for anything Christian.
