Goa bill on Mayem overrules Indo-Portuguese Treaty: Parrikar

A legislation passed by the People’s House is supreme and not a treaty signed between two countries, thus the legislation passed on Mayem Evacuee property would prevail, states chief minister Manohar Parrikar.
Goa Assembly had recently passed a bill, providing rights of land and houses of Mayem to the residents, by abolishing the Title of Ownership with the Portuguese.
The title of ownership, as per the Treaty, had remained with the Portuguese, who were evacuated after Goa liberation.
After passing the legislation, the news is flowing that Portuguese government is upset over it since it violates the treaty signed with the Government of India in this regard.
“Portugal is our friendly country, but still the power to decide about our land remains with me as the chief minister as per our Constitution”, claims Parrikar.
The bill is yet to get an assent and has been sent to the Governor two days ago, he informed.
However, he feels the legislation need not get stalled as the law is clear on this issue.
“Let Narendra Modi handle it once he comes to power at the centre”, quipped Parrikar.
