Goa police file FIR against Tejpal for attempt to rape

The Crime Branch of Goa Police has filed First Information Report against Tehelka Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal, after conducting preliminary inquiry.
Tejpal has already admitted of having committed a crime of sexual assault on his junior colleague during the THiNK Fest held in Goa two weeks ago.
“We have filed the FIR against Tejpal, for attempt to rape and outraging modesty”, DIG O P Mishra told goanews.com.
Earlier, Mishra had said the police would not hesitate in filing FIR for rape if the charges are substantiated during the preliminary inquiry.
Chief minister Manohar Parrikar had ordered the inquiry and take necessary action in this regard, after the news broke out on Wednesday night.
Mishra confirmed that the FIR with these two serious charges has been filed after the preliminary inquiry and the facts emerging out of it.
He however declined to divulge more details.
Though the victim girl has not come forward to file a complaint in this regard, the Goa police have decided to take a suo motto action in this regard.
The preliminary inquiry was accordingly conducted, even by seeking CCTV footage of Hyatt Resort at Bambolim, where the untoward incident believed to have taken place.
The National Commission for Women had also asked Goa police to file FIR in the case.
Several women’s activists had opined that it is a fit case for filing criminal complaint against Tejpal even if the victim girl does not come forward to file a complaint.
