Probe into 'role' of coastal BJP MLAs: NCP

The Nationalist Congress Party wants a thorough probe into the role of legislators representing the coastal belt of North Goa for over 10 years, in the background of the episode of the Nigerians who created a ruckus in Bardez yesterday.

NCP vice president Trajano D’Mello, at a press conference today, alleged that Nigerians in the coastal belt are engaged in drug trafficking with political blessings.

He was obviously referring to BJP MLAs today representing Mandrem in Pedne taluka as well as Siolim, Calangute and Saligao in Bardez taluka.

Health minister Laxmikant Parsekar has been representing Mandrem for the last one decade with a third consecutive term since 2002.

Civil supplies minister Dayanand Mandrekar has been representing Siolim for 13 years with a fourth consecutive term since 1999.

Tourism minister Dilip Parulekar has been representing Saligao (adjacent to Calangute) for the last six years with his second consecutive term.

However, Calangute, in which constituency the incident took place, has been represented by BJP legislator Michael Lobo for the first time in Goa’s history only since last year.

Calangute was earlier represented by Congress legislators like Agnelo Fernandes for two terms and Suresh Parulekar for two terms with one term for Tomazinho Cardoz in 1994.

The Nigerian was murdered in Parra village, hardly 500 metres away from local MLA Lob’s house.

NCP leader D’Mello, who lost two consecutive elections from Saligao since 2007, feels that finding out political connections with drugs trade is vital.

When chief minister Manohar Parrikar said illegally staying foreigners would be deported within a month, he said it means the CM was well aware about the illegal stay of the foreigners.

To authenticate it further, he recalled a recent statement made by deputy chief minister Francisco D’Souza that Goa’s northern coastal belt had become a paradise for criminals and drug traders.

He also came down on the chief minister for criticizing the stranded public at Porvorim, who bashed up some of the Nigerians while the police were unable to control the violent Nigerians.

“The locals who came out in large number to help the helpless police out of love for the State as they could not bear to see public property being vandalized”, he said.
