Dabholkar-acted film on superstition by Nov

Dr Narendra Dabholkar with director Sandeep Navre

So committed was rationalist Dr. Narendra Dabholkar to his work that he even agreed to act for free in a movie espousing eradication of blind beliefs and superstition.

The Marathi film, Gadad Jhambal, directed by Sandeep Navre takes scathing swipes at superstitions and the toll they take on ignorant tribal people. The film is nearing completion and is slated for a November release.

“Dabholkar came to Ramkhind village in Jawhar-Mokhada in the rural tribal belt of Thane district and worked for free, refusing to even reimburse the money he spent travelling to the place. His only request was that the film be shown to activists of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti, the organisation through which he battled superstitions. I feel bad that now I would never be able to show my movie to him, ” said Navre.

“He spent lot of time with the crew, trying to understand the role, which was that of an anti-superstition activist addressing the tribal people and informing them of superstitions, and why they shouldn’t be believed. Dabholkar took very less time to understand his role. There was no need for retakes. The film is a salute to the man who has sacrificed his life for the movement.”

The movie was shot over the past four months in the Jhwar-Mokhada.

The theme was the vast array of superstitions that shackle the daily life of an ordinary tribal.

The tribals ended up understanding the reality behind these superstitions thanks to the time Dr Dabholkar spent with them.

After the formation of Andhashraddha Nirmoolan Samiti, Dabholkar exposed many so-called babas, sadhus and tantriks who claimed to perform miracles of all kinds.

He organised programmes in all parts of the state, and exhibited a number of tricks that exposed the babas and tantriks and which were used to fool people by terming them miracles. is now on Telegram & also Youtube. Kindly subscribe for free & remain updated.
