Flood feared in Bicholim & Sankhli

Level of Bicholim river rising
Bicholim and Sankhli may get overflooded if incessant rains continue for the next 12 hours, it is feared.
The level of river Walwanti in Sankhli is nearing the danger mark while Bicholim river is also running at a quite high level.
Normal life was disrupted today in both Bicholim and Sankhli due to continuous rains witnessed in the last 24 hours.
In fact the fire brigade crew is working round the clock since yesterday, clearing trees and attending other rescue calls.
As water level of Bicholim river rose to three metres, low lying areas like Bandarwada, Gaonkarwada, some part of Bordem, Lamgao and market area in Bicholim town was submerged under water.
According to water resources engineer K P Naik, even Walwanti river level rose to two metres.
In 24 hours, said Naik, 3.5 inches rainfall has been reported while total rainfall in Bicholim has been 64 inches so far.
As a result, some low lying areas in Sakhali have also been submerged under water, including Gauthan, Virdi, and area near Sankhli market.
The water resources department is continuously pumping out water back to river Walwanti to avoid Sankhli getting overflooded.
Felling of trees has caused a loss of around Rs one lakh till now to many families, with one Shashikant Kalangutkar from Mulgao suffering a loss of Rs 50,000.
The residential house of SFO Shripad Gawas was also partially damaged.
Tree felling was also reported at Narve, Shirgao, Mayem and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, a disaster management team led by executive engineer Pramod Badami, AE P V Sreekumar, K P Naik, Kamlakant Majik, deputy collector Narayan Gad and joint Mamlatdar Shripad Majik are continuously monitoring the situation to control the floods in Bicholim.
