Margao council firmly decides to implement biometric

The Margao Municipal Council once again unanimously decided to implement the biometric finger-scanning attendance system while the employees’ petition is expected to be heard in the high court tomorrow.

Several attempts made by the MMC to implement the most authentic attendance system have failed as the municipal employees have opposed it.

When the MMC once again started implementing it two weeks ago and served notices to those not using the biometric machine, the All Goa Municipal Workers’ Association approached the high court.

The Association however did not get interim order, as expected, to stay the ongoing biometric system for attendance.

There is no such tradition for the last 50 years and it is legally not binding to follow it are the arguments made by the petitioners in the court.

The MMC however states that it has legal powers to follow such modern system to streamline the administration and check the attendance.

Today’s MMC council meeting once again decided to go ahead with the system and temporarily employ contract workers if the regular employees boycott he biometric system.

Only one councilor among 20 – Avinash Shirodkar – opposed it while Damodar Shirodkar, another councilor maintained silence during the discussion.

In order the decongest the city during the upcoming Purumetachem Fest, the council has decided to shift the stalls of furniture and readymade garments to the open space near the swimming pool.

The MMC also plans to provide 15 mobile toilets in the city to facilitate the people.
