Margao: Vijai’s total sweep makes Damu bleak, Digambar weak
GOANEWS DESK, PANAJI | 27 October 2015 17:06 ISTWith a total sweep in Fatorda, independent MLA Vijai Sardesai scored over former chief minister Digambar Kamat in Margao while together winning 17 out of 25 seats to rule the capital of South Goa.
Margao MLA Kamat, who formed Margao Civic Alliance with anti-BJP independent Sardesai, could win hardly 6 seats out of 11 in Margao.
Sardesai, on the other hand, won all the 11 wards in Fatorda, making prospects of former BJP MLA Damu Naik bleak in the next Assembly election.
Khudubuddin Bagewadi, an independent, has also now supported the Digambar-Vijai floated Margao Civic Alliance, taking their tally to 18.
This has left only 4 seats for the BJP and 4 independents.
The district town of South Goa would however now be actually in the hands of Sardesai, who has made the ruling BJP bite dust in the 25-member Camra.
The Margao municipality consists of 11 wards each in Fatorda Assembly constituency and Margao constituency while 3 wards from Curtorim constituency, with Housing Board and its surrounding areas.
Among these, Sardesai won all the 11 wards in Fatorda.
In Margao, majority 6 seats went to Kamat with BJP getting pushed to the second position, leaving 3 seats to independents.
In Curtorim, two seats were won by the BJP while the sole independent has supported the MCA.
Kamat however lost two major wards, one to Margao outgoing chairperson Arthur D’Silva, who is charged as an accused in the Louis Berger bribery case along with former CM but claimed to be independent.
Kamat had put his whole weight behind Damodar Shirodkar to defeat ‘independent’ Arthur.
The second defeat of Kamat is Malbhat, his own home, where BJP’s South Goa general secretary Rupesh Mahatme defeated his candidate.
Margao this time witnessed almost 19 new faces, with hardly four sitting councillors getting elected – Arthur, Avinash Shirodkar and Dorris Texeira in Margao and Tito Cardoz, the sole old face in Fatorda.
The Margao voters also defeated 7 sitting councillors, including two former chairpersons – Savio Coutinho and Sushila Naik, former vice chairperson Dhanajay Mayekar as well as former councillors – Raju Naik, Sadanand Naik, his wife Babita and Rosy Pereira.
