Dhawalikars face notices from Human Rights Commission

The Goa Human Rights Commission has issued notice to Shree Madhavrao Dhawalikar Trust, headed by PWD minister Sudin Dhawalikar.

The Commission has responded to the complaint filed by Prakash Velip, president of the United Tribals Association Alliance (UTAA).

A poem called ‘Gawadi,’ published in a book Kerichya Devrambha, has raised a controversy since it contains defamatory matter towards the tribal community.

The book is published by Dhawalikar Trust, headed by both minister Dhawalikar brothers – Sudin and Dipak.

The UTAA had recently even demanded that both the Dhawalikar brothers be sacked from the Manohar Parrikar government for publishing such defamatory poem.

Notices have also been issued to compiler of the book Kanchan Madan Kerkar, collector of poems Laxmi Vishnu Kerkar and Sonia Gurudas Kerkar, who assisted in publishing the book and is the president of the Sateri Mahila Mandal, Keri, Ponda.

The Commission has applied sections pertaining to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 as well as Indian Penal Code for defaming and ridiculing the image of the ST community.

All the respondents have been told to reply to the notices by 27 June.
