Vasco burns over rape of 7-yr old student

The port town of Vasco observed a spontaneous and voluntary bandh today since morning in protest of a rape incident involving seven-year student.

The second grade student was sexually abused in the school toilet next to the office of the headmistress during recess yesterday, by an unidentified person, police said on Tuesday.

Students, parents and other citizens marched in the city demanding immediate arrest of the accused, who is still absconding.

After interrogating several people, the police have released sketch of the accused.

The police has also announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for providing information regarding the accused.

The protestors in the meanwhile have demanded that the headmistress be also dismissed from her service for sheer negligence.

The incident came to light after the minor complained of pain and was referred for medical examination.

The protests had begun from last night itself as parents gathered outside the school premises.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar rushed to the schools to pacify the parents. He also assured them the accused will not be spared.

While the education department declared a two-day holiday to pacify the protests, it spread throughout the city today morning with closing of shops and even public transport.
