GCCI to teach jail inmates soft business skills

Several jail inmates from a sub jail in Goa will be armed with a business plan in their kitty, when they would be released in 3-6 six months from now.

In what seems to be country's first ever initiative in the jail, Goa's apex trade body and an international business training initiative have decided to impart skill training for jail inmates in the state, especially for those who will be released within next 3-6 months after completing their punishment.

Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and i-Create, India will impart soft skills for the jail inmates so that they can live a decent life after spending years together behind bars, GCCI President Manguirish Pai Raikar said.

The 10-day-long programme would be launched on Monday, July 16 at Sub Jail in Sada, a prison in the port town of Vasco, 35 kms away from here.

Raikar said the trade body will continue supporting the inmates till their business is set up.

It has decided to help them in arranging loans, with the help of state government, to begin a business venture.

"They will have their business plan ready even before they step out from the prison," Raikar said.

I-Create India is a subsidiary of the US-based I-Create Inc, which helps people from being job seekers to job givers by making them entrepreneurs.

Raikar said the self sufficiency will help them to tackle the social stigma that one faces after going through imprisonment.
