Mah NGO demands action against Goa cop for petrol smuggling

A Mumbai-based social organisation has served "a legal notice" to Goa's Director General of Police (DGP) seeking suspension of an inspector, who allegedly `colluded' with Maharashtra policemen to smuggle liquor across the state border.

Mumbai-based Hindu Swarajya Pratishthan has demanded suspension of inspector C L Patil of Goa police and have threatened to file a PIL in the High Court otherwise.

On March 15, 2012, at Pernem check post, Patil, acting on a tip-off, stopped a vehicle carrying Maharashtra policemen, and found a large number of liquor bottles inside.

Nine policemen including an inspector-rank officer were arrested in this operation, jointly conducted by Goa police and Excise Department.

All the policemen were later suspended by the Maharashtra Home ministry.

But the association's lawyer, Sanjiv Punalekar, has claimed in the notice that Patil walked away from the spot as the inspector from Maharashtra was his batch-mate.

"It is unfortunate that Patil walked off the scene and left the mess for the officials of the Excise Department who were junior and inexperienced and who did not even had powers to arrest the criminals," Punalekar has claimed.
