Fully satisfied with MoI policy: Sudin

Transport minister Sudin Dhawalikar has said he is fully satisfied with the cabinet decision proposed by chief minister Manohar Parrikar on the controversial medium of instruction issue.

Speaking to Prudent TV channel in a Head On programme, Dhawalikar informed that he was taken into confidence before preparing a cabinet note on the MoI policy.

Parrikar has decided to give grants only to Konkani and Marathi medium private primary schools, but will also give salary grants to 105 Church-run English medium primary schools with 25,000 students.

According to Dhawalikar, this decision is different from the decision taken by his erstwhile Digambar Kamat government headed by Congress.

“Kamat government had not specified the future of education, but this policy lays it down in a defined manner”, said the MGP leader.

According to him, this policy does not allow any English medium primary school in future and even the classroom strength of the existing 105 schools is being frozen.

He was however not sure whether no English medium primary school, without grants, would be given permission in future.

“That would be decided by the committee of educationists, but right now it is being frozen”, he said.

Dhawalikar also said the policy clearly upholds the principle of imparting primary education only in the mother tongue – Konkani or Marathi.

Dhawalikar was personally present when CM Parrikar addressed a press conference spelling out the MoI policy.
