Politics | Assembly 12

Poll results expected by 11 am

The counting of votes for the Goa assembly elections would take place on Tuesday at two places and the results would be out by 10 am to 11 am, officials said on Monday.

The counting for 23 constituencies in North Goa would be held at VM Salgaoncar college of Law near Miramar beach while for 17 constituencies, it would be at Kare college of Law in Margao.

The counting will start by 8 am at these two centres which are currently heavily guarded.

All the 1600 EVMs were shifted to these two venues on Sunday amid tight security, according to officials.

The March 3 polls saw unprecedented response from the people with total voting touching historic 81 per cent mark surpassing the previous high of little over 71 per cent reached in 2007.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Working President Francisco Sardinha said that the party’s campaign during the polls resulted in people coming out in large number, adding that voters were angry with the negative campaigning by BJP.

The BJP spokesman Vishnu Wagh, however, maintained that the large turnout of voters would favour the BJP-Maharashtrawadi Gomantak party alliance.

Congress has contested 33 out of a total of 40 seats, BJP - 28, NCP - 7, MGP- 8, Goa Vikas party - 11 and Trinamool Congress party - 21 seats.
