Eminent painters to paint in 4 Portuguese mansions
PTI, PANAJI | 29 August 2011 19:50 ISTThe four Portuguese-era mansions here have turned into art workshops for the nationally acclaimed artists during the Art Festival that commenced in Goa last week.
The festival began on August 25 and will conclude on August 31.
Theses four Portuguese-era homes, which are dating back between 16th and 19th century, are housing these artists, who are painting and sculpting throughout the day.
These mansions are owned by Malcom D'Souza, who is an art lover himself.
Theodore Mariano Mesquita, curator of the workshop, said that 10 of India's leading artists drawn from around the country and four emerging artists from Goa are participating in the festival.
The artists from India - Anandajit Ray from Baroda, Avijit Dutta from Kolkatta, Anjana Mehra, Baiju Parthan, Brinda Chudasama Miller and Sunil Padwal from Mumbai, Karl Antao and Walter D'Souza from Ahmadabad, Manisha Gera Baswani from Delhi and Theodore Mesquita from Goa, are participating in the camp.
Goan artists including Charudatta Prabhudesai, Wilson D'Souza, Siddharth Gosavi and Aadhi Vishal will join them.
"The younger artists can learn from the experiences of senior artists," Prabhudesai said, when asked about the concept of the festival.
Dutta said that the festival has no particular theme, but the ambience in the heritage houses is encouraging for the painter.
The Festival of Art is a mutual exchange of contemporary beliefs, encompassing the visual landscape across borders and boundaries, in a constituted space, the organisers said.
The organiser intends to put up the paintings drawn during the festival and sculptures in a cultural centre, which will be located in one of these mansions.
"The paintings and sculptures are not for sale," Mesquita said adding that the festival will be held annually in Goa.
