Narvekar floats Goa Democratic Front

Former minister Dayanand Narvekar, who quit the Congress last week, yesterday formed a new local outfit – Goa Democratic Front, on the eve of Lok Sabha election.
The announcement was made yesterday at a rally he organised at Dhuler in Mapusa, his hometown, in the presence of around 500 workers.
The former Congress bigwig was defeated by Aldona’s BJP legislator Glen Ticlo in the last Assembly election, held in 2012.
The GDF will contest both the Lok Sabha seats, he announced.
In the same breadth, Narvekar also said he is capable of winning four Assembly seats – Tivim, Aldona, Siolim and Porvorim, in the next Assembly poll.
“I strengthened the Congress by quitting the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, but the Congress finished Goa”, he alleged.
He also recalled the Congress winning all seats from Bardez taluka in 1980 poll while it does not a having single seat in the taluka today.
He also said that in Goa, the government does not run mining, but mining runs the government.
He demanded that the BJP should recover at least 10 per cent of Rs 35,000 crore from the mine owners and distribute it among the mining affected people.
Shashikant Sardesai, a Narvekar supporter, in his speech expressed the need of a strong regional party since the MGP has shunned away from regional sentiments of the people.
“The MGP and Dhawalikar brothers run behind power, no matter whether it is the Congress or the BJP”, he said.
Narvekar claims to have several block Congress presidents and other office bearers with him, but Congress president John Fernandes has denied this claim.
Quite a few Congress block office bearers from Siolim, Tivim, Aldona and Porvorim were seen on the dais at yesterday’s rally.
