Party-level panchayat poll better: Parsekar

Panchayat minister Laxmikant Parsekar personally favours holding panchayat elections on party lines.

“But we have not decided it so far. We plans to invite suggestions in this regard before taking any decision”, Parsekar said, in reply to a question asked by the media.

According to him, the party-level election would put a stop to the ongoing musical chair in the panchayats with any Sarpanch ruling for hardly six months.

“It will give stability to the panchayats”, claims the panchayat minister.

He also felt that it would not defeat the basic purpose of providing autonomy to self-governed local bodies.

Goa has 190 panchayats, representing over 300 villages.

The MLAs as well as political parties find it tough to tackle the village-level politics as several party workers contest against each other in panchayat elections.

He also said the states are empowered necessary amendment to this effect to the Panchayat Act and no constitutional amendment is required.

TWO PARALLEL GOVERNMENT IN GOA (PANCHAYAT & GOA ASSEMBLY). BOTH ARE MAKING LAWS. BETTER TO MERGE WITH EACH OTHER AND BECOME ONE (GOA GOVERNMENT).

JOSE ROD , GOA

Panchayat is like a head of the family. Panchayat should work in the interest of villagers & village. They should not take revenge for not supported them on the election day. Panchayat should forget politics and work for the betterment of villagers & village. Panchayat should deliver their work before time and without asking bribes.
