Radhika & Kolvekar elected to head Ponda

Radhika Nayak addressing after getting elected

Radhika Nayak and Shantaram Kolvekar were elected unopposed today morning as chairperson and vice chairperson of Ponda municipality.

They belong to the ruling combine of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The ruling combine had literally swept the polls held on 12 May, winning 11 out of 14 seats.

The opposition Congress, led by former minister Ravi Naik, could win only one seat, losing even his son Roy.

The other two elected councilors were independents.

After election, Nayak said she would fulfill all the assurances given during election and work for the development of Ponda.

This is the second time Nayak, principal of Dempo College of Commerce in Panaji, is becoming the chairperson of Ponda.

She was earlier heading Ponda municipality in 1996 when, like this time, Ponda chairperson post was reserved for a woman.

Ponda MGP MLA Lavoo Mamledar, who was personally present at the election, assured total co-operation to the council.

Local BJP leader Narendra Savoikar also expressed confidence in the council.

The election was conducted by Surendra Naik as the presiding officer.

Ponda municipality administrator Narayan Navti and chief officer Sagun Velip were also present.
