Cong for review on debarring jailed candidates

The ruling Congress party is planning to approach the Supreme Court to review its judgments over not allowing a person to contest election, if jailed even for a day.

Except preventive detention, the Supreme Court has barred the person from contesting election for any other kind of jail term, including police custody.

“I don’t know whether the court is aware that any person having name on the electoral roll has a right to contest, which seizes to exist now with this judgment”, said Shantaram Naik, the Rajya Sabha MP and AICC secretary.

While stating that the Congress would definitely approach the apex court with a plea to review its judgment, he felt even other parties would be compelled to follow the suit.

Regarding another court decision to ban caste rallies during election, the lawyer-turned-politician what stand the court would take regarding the Scheduled Castes recognized in the Constitution of India.
