“Matanhy Saldhana was a path breaker, a man with principles and a true honest Goan with traditional values. His death is a major loss to the state and personal loss to me”, said chief minister Manohar Parrikar while paying homage to him.
Tourism minister Saldhana died of a massive heart attack today early morning. He was sworn in as his cabinet colleague on 9 March.
In his condolence message, Parrikar said: Saldhana was a leader of the masses in true sense of the term. He rose in Goan social field as a champion of Ramponkar and throughout his life worked for their upliftment. He was the beacon of weaker section of the society, who looked upon him as a saviour to mitigate their sufferings.
The chief minister further said in the death of Saldhana, Goa has lost a great leader who had big concern for the welfare of the people.
His death has caused irreparable loss for the future of Goa and it is difficult to fill the void created by his death, he added.
At a loss of words. A person who stood by principles, a rarity (we still have a few other unsung heroes)in todays Goa. A joy to have a conversation with. Difficult to believe the death, first read in your edition, since I was just relishing the rout of selfish and mean leaders.
This demise will bring out two dimensions in all the politicos. One that through this first test and hurdle, the new govt. will emerge stronger and more focussed on achieving the goals of Mathany, and second is the tributes flowing from all the hypocrites, who right now must be already planning their strategy for the by-elections.
Mathany we will miss you and your plain, simple ideas and advise.
It was looking at people like Shri Mathanhy Saldnha that made one believe that all are not thieves and corrupt criminals in politics....
My condolences to the family of Mr. Matanhy Saldanha. He was a Great Man; a rare person of the greatest integrity and love for Goa. This is a loss for Goa and Goans. I am sure he had many dreams for Goa and wish that atleast some of them are realized in the years to come. The biggest tribute to him maybe if the present government works extra hard and sincerely in this direction. Again condolences to the family of this Great Goan.
just finished the Solar Eclips of congress power in Goa, and was very excited to see the good things from BJP Government, because of good ministers like Mr.Saldhana, but God took him away from us, May his Soul rest in Peace. This blow is not only for his family, but for every goan individuals.
well what can we say when its god will, well goa has lost a good son , well he wanted to do many a things for goa and when he had the power he is no more, well only praying for him may his soul rest in peace
My deep condolences on the sad demise of Saldhana. May the departed soul rest in peace and May GOD provide enough courage to his family to bear this tragic loss.
its true whet Mr ManoharParrikar said as i only met Mr Saldanha for my frang fathers funral and heard a lot good about his through people and school students even in sewden as i came across a lot of his student who are now great personalities like chefs, engeniers, doctors, etc....its a hug huge losss for the pearl like state Goa ... as it lost the person who would have polished the pearl (Goa). God bless his family and may his soul reast in peace.
I had the privilege of working alongside Mr. Mathany Saldanha on various issues and at many agitations. Unlike Mathany who sacrificed much personally in his struggle for a better Goa, many have become MLA’s without contributing to the betterment and welfare of society. For some of them it has been a tale from rags to riches. At times I may have disagreed with his views and approach. But nobody can deny the fact that Mathany was a great fighter. Men with the strength, courage and resolve as Mathany Saldanha are few. A fitting tribute to this lion of a man would be for every Goan to strive and salvage what remains of Goa
I have just returned from India/Goa to this sad news. From speaking to various people there, specially after the recent elections Mathany was highly regarded and held in high esteem.Goans had high hopes in him, following the recently concluded elections and his death will surely impact them and a great loss felt.May his Soul rest In Heavenly Peace
We lost a honest politician. May his soul rest in peace.
MR. PARRIKAR SIR, CAN YOU PLS WORK TO FULFILL HIS DREAM OF GETTING GOA THE "SPECIAL STATUS”?
AS PER PAST EXPERIENCES I KNOW THAT WE MOURN AND SPEAK FOR A FEW DAYS AND THEN BACK TO SQUARE ONE.
'Brave men die once. cowards die a thousand deaths'
Goa lost a brave son. Rather than mourn his death, we should celebrate his life. A life lived with dignity, uncompromising principles and emormous respect.
Its only fitting that he left us on a high. A cabinet minister in the new dispensation after a lifetime of struggle against all that was unethical.
He is one of the few activists who had the guts to join politics and make a mark. While other politicians would count their crores and ill goten wealth along with the curses of goans....for Mr Mathany Saldhana all goans would say
"A life well lived respectfully'
He stood so tall among many dwarfs in today's politics...A man with principles and ideologies...A man with values sp difficult to find in today's politics....His untimely demise is a big loss to Goa and Goans...I salute the great son of the soil....and pray his soul will rest in peace....
Goa has lost a precious person, very honest , poilte , non-corrupt politician...It was a real time when Goa wanted Leaders like him..May his soul rest in peace..
The year 2012 started with so many different types of trajedies. 1st was Calvim-Aldona, 2nd was Goa elections ( 69 ) Topsy turvy and the 3rd one is of today.
Its a shocking news early in the morning today. Goa and Goans lost its Son,a brave true spirit, a strong voice of Goa.
May his soul rest in peace.

Its a shocking news, really a big loss for future of Goa, we a lost a leader of common people, cannot belive he is not there with us
Dear Sandesh bab,
Hats off to you! You always inform the Goans first than any other source of information. Keep it up! If you don't mind, Pls correct the name Matanhy.
Dear fellow goans,
You may join in a prayer to our departed leader, on www.unitedgoans.com
May his soul rest in peace. And may God give courage to his family to bear this great loss.
A long association has ended. I had participated with him in almost all major agitations (1977-99) and I had also campaigned for him and Erasmio Sequira in assembly elections-1984, 1989. Matanhy who did his MA in Political science when we were at old campus is no more. He used to join us when we organized meetings at GU against apartheid and for release of Mandela. He helped us in getting Mother Thereza to visit our old campus. He opposed the backdoor sale of GU land to private corporates. He stood by us when we as student leaders demanded a separate Goa University (1977). He became the face of agitation of traditional fishermen of Goa. He was the apt choice for the ministries of tourism , forests and environment....to which he would have done full justice as a honest politician...
We can't forget that he was a teacher with an impeccable record....
These are some of his cherished memories when he had attended a CSE seminar at our campus

Join me in offering a tribute to him....
Was a responsible person. He would have definitely done justice to the portfolios allotted to him. Goans had high hopes that he would deliver. Anyway, God has His own plans. May his soul rest in peace.
A sad day for Goa for the loss of Matanhy Saldhana was a true honest Goan with traditional values. May his soul rest in peace
I hide my tears when I say your name, but the pain in my heart is still the same. Although I Smile & Seem Carefree, There is no one Who miss u
THIS NEWS HAS BROUGHT TEARS TO MY EYES & HEART................THIS IS THE PERMANENT HUGE UNRECOVERABLE LOSS FOR GOA & GOANS........... "MEN OF PRINCIPLES" ............. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE
Shri Matanhy Saldhana has been a person of lively spirit, served the needy for a justifiable cause. A true son of the soil had not only served the Goans but the people of the nation in term of his great vision to konkani literature and thoughts.
May the departed soul rest in peace and May GOD provide enough courage to his family to bear this tragic loss.

GOA HAS LOST A GREAT HERO, I CALL HIM FATHER OF ACTIVISM IN GOA. A SIMPLE PERSON WITH IRON STRONG DETERMINATION. HE IS AN EXAMPLE OF A LEADER WHO HAD NO LOVE FOR POWER. I HOPE THAT WE GOANS WILL CARRY WHAT HE TAUGHT US THROUGH HIS LIFE........MAY THE ALMIGHTY EMBRACE HIS SOUL............
