GSPCB stops MPT's coal handling

The Goa State Pollution Control Board has revoked the permission granted to Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) to handle coal at its two berths.
GSPCB member Secretary Lavinsons Martin said the consent given to MPT to operate under the Air and Water Pollution Control Act has been withdrawn due to the failure of the port authorities to control pollution in Vasco town.
The Board in the past had issued notice to the port authorities after it was noticed that the pollution levels in the town had exceeded the permissible levels.
Martin said the MPT officials also failed to take the necessary precautions suggested to them to control dust pollution arising out of coal handling at its two berths.
The port Web site mentions that they handle 7.2 million tonnes of coal and coke at its berth number 10 and 11.
The GSPCB has also directed the MPT to submit a detailed action plan within 15 days listing out the measures it intends to undertake to control pollution levels.
