Locals chase American to death, suffocating in Goa’s paddy field

Caitan Vholte, 30-year old American tourist, died in Goa suffocating in the sludge yesterday after he was chased by the locals, thinking he was a thief.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar confirmed the horrifying incident that happened in his Mandrem constituency when opposition leader Pratapsing Rane raised the issue in the Assembly today.
“I am told he was chased by the people as well as the police and he died out of suffocation in the sludge of the paddy field at Korgao”, said Parsekar, who also assured to find out of the details.
Mapusa DySP Mahesh Gaonkar however has denied police chasing him and claimed that the American national denied help the police offered him.
Information gathered in this regard reveals that Vholte had a squabble with three Nigerians in Harmal at around 3.30 pm yesterday, as a result of which he started running while he was chased by the Nigerians.
He was shouting for help throughout till he reached Korgao, say the locals.
While he was resting on a scooter at Korgao, some locals thought he was trying to steal the scooter and tried to chase him away, shouting ‘chor chor’.
Scared of the locals, Vholte ran away and jumped in the roadside field and started running, not realising how deep the sludge is.
He fell down in the sludge and got suffocated, while the police were watching the whole scene as silent spectators.
The locals then went to rescue him and managed to pull him out of the field to rush him to the doctor. However he breathed his last on the way.
According to DySP Gaonkar, the police did not stand as silent spectators but tried to help him.
“But he ran away from the police”, he said, adding that he was also shouting ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ while running in the field.
He also claimed that he started eating the sludge in the field.
The police have registered it as an unnatural death and awaiting American embassy official to arrive to conduct post-mortem.
