Gujarat arrests 3 bookies, just like Goa

While Goa police arrested six bookies involved in betting of IPL, Gujarat police arrested three more bookies operating in a similar manner.

“Anil Kumar, Uttam Chand and Harshad Ramesh were arrested late last night with cash worth Rs 16,780, a laptop, a television set and seven cell phones from Ramji mandir, near Kaligam in Sabarmati area of the city,” said Sabarmati police inspector V R Patel.

Two of them belong to Kaligam in Sabarmati locality while the third person is a friend of the duo, police said.

They were allegedly indulging in betting inside the temple room when they were arrested, police said.

The trio will be produced in a local court today, police said.

On Saturday, Vinod Mulchandani, a bookie was arrested from Satellite area of the city while cash, gold and electronic equipment worth Rs 1.54 crore were recovered from him.

The court released him on bail yesterday.

The arrest followed Gujarat government’s advisory to district police chiefs and police commissioners to crack down on bookies.

On May 16, Gujarat cricketer Amit Singh, who turned a bookie, was arrested along with three Rajasthan Royals players — S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — for allegedly indulging in spot-fixing in the sixth edition of the IPL which concluded on Sunday.

Thereafter, Manan Bhatt, a bookie was arrested from the state for allegedly accepting and placing bets on IPL matches.
