The Congress finished half of Goa through land conversions and destroying the greenery, now the BJP wants to finish rest of Goa by giving free licence to cut coconut trees; our Identity.
This was the main plank on which several social activists gathered today on a by-pass at Goa Velha and then concluded the protest on Taleigao-St Cruz Bandh, which is proposed to be widened by cutting all the coconut trees.
The protest organised by History-Heritage Action Group: Goa (HHAGG) received response from all the corners and also the locals of Goa Velha.
Joined them were Panaji-based Goa Forgiving, Green Brigade as well as Betul-based Orixtt Porjecho Avaz, which is opposing the Defence Expo in their village.
Congress MLA Alex Reginald Lourenco also joined the protest.
Prajal Sakhardande, leader of the HHAGG, said the BJP government is out to finish the identity when Goa is entering the golden jubilee year of Opinion Poll, which was won to protect Goa’s identity in 1967.
The government is dancing at the tunes of builders’ lobby and the amendment to the Preservation of Trees Act should now prove to be the final nail in the BJP’s coffin, he said.
“If we give five more years to this government, then we will have to blame ourselves for the destroyed Goa”, he cautioned, while Assembly election is a year ahead.
The participants also included Zarina da Cunha, Kapil Korgaonkar, Presy Pereira, Armand Gonsalves, Perpet Caido, Avinash Tavares, Dominic Noronha and others.
They shouted slogans against the government, prominent among which was: Hem Sorkar Bondeanchem.
This protesting people are jerks.
As a bhatkar I welcome government's move to classify coconut as grass. Coconut growing is a worthless occupation and I am planning to sell my trees to a landscaping company which will move them from my bhaat to a resort.
It is a win win situation because the tree lives, I get more money and free land to be then used for more innovative agriculture.
Talegao people have always been bonde.
