Goa urges PM to participate 'actively' with US

Goa has urged Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to 'actively participate' in the attempts of USA to crush terrorism.

A resolution to this effect was unanimously passed at a cabinet meeting of the local BJP government here, while expressing grief over horrifying death of people in the USA due to terrorist attacks.

Elaborating further, Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar said an appeal has been made to the prime minister to participate actively, which could mean providing air base, sealing the borders or any other step which may be felt necessary.

Reacting to the press reports that Goa may be one of the places which USA would like to use for its activities, Parrikar said the decision is left with the centre and there is no question of objecting to it.

Meanwhile, security forces have tightened its net around Goa with President of India K R Narayanan arriving here for a weeklong holiday. Staying at Cabo Raj Bhavan without any public activity, he will be leaving on 23 September.

"Necessary security precautions are being taken by defence forces like navy and air force as well as the authorities like Coast Guard, besides the local police department, in view of the current situation", said Parrikar.

However, he did not feel any necessity to sound red alert in Goa.
