Cyclone moves off Goa

The threat of cyclone to Goa and parts of Karnataka coast is averted as the cyclonic storm has now moved northwards.

The meteorologists however fear that the cyclonic winds may hit the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, between Devgad to Alibag, by tomorrow if there is no further change in the movement of the winds.

According to S R Bajpai, director of India Meteorological Observatory, the storm had stopped after moving till 300 kms away from the coast. It has now moved northwards, skipping Goa coast.

The whole state administration was put on alert yesterday as the winds were moving in the direction of hitting coast of Karnataka, Goa and Konkan at the speed of 80 to 100 kms per hour.

The authorities had set up round-the-clock control rooms at all the taluka mamltadar offices as well as district collectorates, besides warning fishermen not to enter the sea for the next 24 hours.

As this would have been the first stormy cyclone hitting Goa, the state had also published a detailed list of Dos and Don'ts for the public, in order to take all kind of pre and post-cyclone precautions.
