Goa-Delhi & milennium special trains for Goa bash
18 December 1999 23:12 IST Konkan Railway has announced a special fully air-conditioned millennium special train from Mumbai to Goa on 31 December 1999.
The train would leave Mumbai in the morning to reach the tourist state in the evening to celebrate the New Year eve. The same train would then return on 1 January evening for Mumbai.
While the KRC has already started a Christmas Special train every alternate day from 20 December onwards till 3 January from Mumbai to Goa, its officials have now also announced four more special trains from Mumbai from 28 December onwards. Details of it are yet to be made public.
Meanwhile, the South Central Railway has decided to finally start plying of passenger trains from Castlerock (Karnataka) to Vasco (Goa), which was stopped since the work of broad gauge was taken up three years ago.
It would now begin with bringing Goa Express, starting from Nizamuddin (Delhi) right up to Vasco by 31 December. The train was coming only up to Londa in Karnataka all these years, causing grave inconvenience for the people.
The train service on the stretch had remained suspended even after completion of the broad gauge work as the Safety Commissioner for Railways had not granted permission for passenger service because no catch sidings were provided to stop a run away train in case driver loses control on the steep gradient.
To overcome the difficulty, the South Central Railways has now invented a device – the Automatic Energy Brake System – which could be used in any ghat section for safe running of the trains.
The SCR plans to resume all the passenger services once coaches with air brake system are built for those trains. It includes trains plying from Hyderabad, Tirupati and Bangalore to Goa.
