Guv gives assent to ordinance, Dr Shetye continues to be VC

It’s official. Dr Satish Shetye will continue as the vice chancellor of Goa University for one more year.

Governor Mridula Sinha has given her assent today to the ordinance issued by Goa government yesterday.

Accordingly, order of his extension has also been issued by Goa government.

Raj Bhavan sources confirmed that Governor Sinha signed the ordinance today afternoon.

The Governor had earlier declined to give approval to the decision of Goa University’s executive council to extend VC’s term.

Dr Shetye’s term, as per the present statutes of Goa University, expired on 25 October, at the age of 65.

Appointed on 17 September 2012, he was thus getting only three years in the seat of VC.

However, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar wanted Dr Shetye to continue for five years, thus recommended to the EC to change the statutes.

The EC had accordingly decided to make it a rule that the term of VC would continue till the age of 70 – and not 65 – but not beyond five years.

An extra-ordinary EC meeting was convened in this regard on 15 October.

Governor Sinha, as the Chancellor of GU, however declined to approve the EC decision, raising technical issues on 22 October, three days before VC’s term could expire.

She had also issued letter to the GU to relieve Dr Shetye and appoint Dr Y V R Reddy, the seniormost Dean, as the officiating VC.

In a last-minute bid, Goa government thus yesterday issued an ordinance by circulating a cabinet note, extending Dr Shetye’s term by one more year, till new VC is identified and appointed.

The issue of changing the statutes and extending VC’s superannuation period till the age of 70 however still remains to be tackled.

REGISTRAR CONTINUES

Meanwhile, Governor Sinha is also expected to withdraw her earlier order of relieving Registrar Vijayendra Kamat.

The order was issued by the Governor along with the order to relieve the VC.

As Kamat’s tenure was earlier extended up to April next year, the GU had sought an explanation from the Raj Bhavan regarding the new order of relieving him.

Sources in the Raj Bhavan disclosed to goanews.com that Governor Sinha would also write back to the university that Kamat could continue till April.

Goa University sources said the process of appointing a new registrar has already begun.
