Goa Govt told to identify 1 burial/cremation ground in each district

The Goa Human Rights Commission has directed Goa government to immediately identify two burial and cremation grounds – in the South and the North – before 14 December.

An order in this regard was passed by Justice P K Mishra, chairman of the Commission, along with his two associates – A D Salkar and J P Keny.

The order told Adv K L Bhagat, the government counsel, to ascertain from the director of Municipal Administration and Directorate of Panchayats about the availability of any two burial grounds and cremation grounds.

Dr Anthony Rodrigues, a concerned citizen, had approached the Human Rights Commission, highlighting the plight of Goan citizens due to lack of burial grounds and crematoriums in various parts of Goa.

Pending final hearing, the Commission has now asked the government to immediately identify two places, where the dead bodies could either be buried or cremated.

Adv Satish Sonak, while arguing for Dr Rodrigues, has said the non-availability of burial and cremation grounds in different talukas of Goa has resulted into violation of rights of the dead person to have a decent burial or cremation.

The next hearing is fixed on 14 December.
