Petition against Digambar's bail maintained, hearing from next Thu

The high court has finally maintained the petition challenging anticipatory bail granted to former chief minister Digambar Kamat.

The hearing on the merits of the petition would now begin on next Thursday.

What it means in simple words is that the high court would now hear the arguments on whether anticipatory bail should be granted to the former CM or not.

The crime branch of Goa police had challenged the CBI court order, granting anticipatory bail to Kamat in Louis Berger bribery case.

Will Kamat challenge today’s order in the Supreme Court?

“Let’s read the order first and then we will decide”, Adv Surendra Desai, counsel of Kamat, told goanews.com.

Pending hearing on the basics of the petition before the high court, Kamat can challenge today’s order, which deals with technical matter.

Kamat had argued that the crime branch petition should be rejected since it had come to the high court without completing the formality of technically arresting and releasing him, after he was granted anticipatory bail.

The crime branch however had argued vehemently that such formality is not required.

Kamat is facing a serious charge of accepting huge amount of bribe from Louis Berger International Inc., the US-based consultancy firm.

The firm has admitted before the Department of Justice in New Jersey of paying bribes of total Rs six crore to ‘a’ minister and government officials in Goa to get the consultancy contract of JICA project.

Louis Berger was selected for consultancy to implement the project, worth Rs 1031 crore, funded by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
