Sameer and Arjun Salgaocar move for anticipatory bail

Sameer and Arjun Salgaocar, sons of Goa’s top mining businessman Anil Salgaocar, have filed anticipatory bail applications, fearing arrest.

Both of them were summoned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Crime Branch of Goa police, in connection with an illegal mining case.

They have been implicated along with former urban development minister Joaquim Alemao, alleging illegal extraction of iron ore.

Sources in the crime branch of Goa police confirmed of Salgaocar brothers having filed the anticipatory bail applications.

This is the first time the big mining house is being touched by Goa government while Shah Commission had alleged several illegalities in Goa’s iron ore mining, involving several big businessmen.

Anil Salgaocar was also an independent MLA from Sanvordem when this alleged illegality reported to have taken place in Sanguem taluka.

In 2014, the SIT had registered a criminal offence against Alemao and others under various relevant sections of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act and Forest Conservation Act, 1980.

The complaint is filed against S Kantilal Pvt Ltd, a mining lease holder.

The SIT had initially summoned Anilbab, as he is widely known, for inquiry. However, he is reported to be not keeping well.

Following this, the SIT summoned both Sameer and Arjun together, on Monday.

However, they skipped the summons stating that they are busy with their father’s treatment.

Instead of reporting to the crime branch for interrogation, the Salgaocar brothers have now preferred to approach the court for anticipatory bail, said sources at crime branch.

The matter would come up for hearing tomorrow.

'Hafto' pavong na astalo. Or a political stunt to dissociate public attention from Digamber. Why other Miners (Tarcar, Mangalji, Salgaonkars, etc.) are not even touched so far. Surely BJP in Goa must have been in a deep slumber thus far. Nothing will happen with this case also.
