Mee Nathuram.. disallowed in Goa
18 July 1998 22:04 IST The Congress government in Goa has decided to prohibit from staging the controversial Marathi play, Mee Nathuram Godse Boltoy, in the tourist state, which is a next favourite place for performances of the commercial Marathi dramas after Maharashtra.
Replying to a demand raised by Dr Kashinath Jalmi, the state opposition leader, in the ongoing monsoon Assembly session, chief minister Pratapsing Rane categorically said his government would not allow any sort of character assassination of any national leader like Mahatma Gandhi.
Though the state has no censorship rules, Rane has assured to take appropriate action if the play comes to Goa, but only after applying the mind rationally to the problem and getting convinced that the play defames Gandhi's image.
The drama glorifies Godse' action to kill the Mahatma and projects him as a hero and God while Gandhi is projected as a demon. No patriotic person can tolerate such an insult, asserted Jalmi.
